Happiness For Sale MotelYou  CAN buy happiness.  I didn’t even know it was true until I saw the sign. I had always heard the opposite….that money can’t buy happiness, but now I know better.  It’s for sale.  I was driving down the road when I saw this sign and did a double take.  I hit the brakes, turned around and told Ramona I needed  a picture of that.  Fortunately she is used to that.  I do it fairly often.  She stood beside the highway with cars whizzing by and took that picture

I can see a typo a mile away…..except when it is made by me, usually in 48 point type or larger.  I am used to picking up typos, goodness knows in my 30 years of publishing a newspaper I have made my share of some real beauties.  My whole family can pick out typos from son Joe David who grew up catching typos in the newspaper to my brother John who is the best proof-reader living today in America. He is infuriating.  But he learned from the best of the best  in Dr. Red Gibson at The University of Texas Journalism school.   Dr. Gibson specialized in community journalism and died young of a heart attack.  He probably was reading something I had written and keeled over.

My typos are:  Noticeable. Glaring.  Embarrassing.  X rated.  Nonsensical. All of the aforementioned.

But I digress.  Back to happiness.  The revelation of finding out that you can actually buy happiness was like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.  It was truly unexpected, but much appreciated. It’s a very good thing to know that if you actually need it, it is there waiting to be purchased.

And I know the exact address where it can be purchased.  You probably don’t.

Then I got to thinking.  And that (thinking) has always been the downfall of many a good man.  I thought a bit and realized I did not have to buy happiness.  The fact is, I am already happy.
I am doing what I love to do.

  • I have a publication with a large readership which is always good for a newspaper man.
  • A great wife who loves me back and will get out of the car and take pictures for me.
  • One good dog and another dog who chews thing up and eats anything.
  • A lot of really good friends; I can’t go anywhere that I don’t run into someone I know or someone who knows me.
  • A great place to live here at Sherwood Ranch.
  • My own manspace both down in my office and down at the dock on the Spring Creek.
  • Semi-good health

In short,  I have a lot of reasons to be grateful and I am.  Being grateful is a good thing.  I wasn’t grateful for much in my former life.  I am now,  and that has made a world of difference.  If you are drifting in your life just a bit, try being grateful.

It really helps

I’m David

Grateful, and and I know where they ‘sale’ happiness

Ya don’t think that the reason they can sale (sell?) happiness is that they have an adult book, and movie store right next door? Just a thought.

Is it considered a typo if you leave out a comma where there should be one?

This is really good news, I thought the last place happiness was for sale was at the M&M Courts in Austin, or the Chicken Ranch in Lagrange, both of which are no longer in the happiness business,

David, you are so right-on. It is great just to be alive and have wonderful friends, family, and pets. Anything else is just a bonus.

David, Mr. Werst… (first neighbor, then teacher)
I’m so excited my Mom told me about your website! I’ve really enjoyed reading your blogs, you have some really interesting stories(always have)! I’ve let my girls look over the site, and I told them all about you! They think it’s all “pretty cool!”
