You’ve heard of a Yule log, you’ve heard of other kinds of logs, now I’ve come up with a Werst Log.
Let me explain….
Here at Sherwood Ranch, we have rather large pecan trees. In fact, they are probably the largest pecan trees you have ever seen. There are around 35 or so of them and most are too large to reach around. Some are too large for two large men to reach around. Remember, these are just branches, the trunks of the trees are much larger.
A year or so ago, one of the branches broke off in a storm, crushed the fence, crushed the donkey barn, and left some rather large branches scattered around the yard.
I turned lemons into lemonade and decided to make a statement as to who lived along this rural road out in Real Texas. We cut a section out of the fallen branch, cut two stands and decided to set the log on the stands and put our name on it. That’s all a lot easier said than done. It took some heavy equipment, someone experienced with a chain saw, and my expert supervision.
Our thanks go to Joe David Werst for his chain saw expertise and to neighbor Donna Smith for her tractor work.
And that is what we ended up with. We still have three or four more logs that size or bigger in case you are interested in making yourself one of these. Just bring a big loader with you.
I’m David out in Real Texas at Sherwood Ranch.
Hope you can find us if you drive by…..

I’d love to have something like that on my place. I got
to thinking (which is dangerous), it would really be nice
to have something like that out of Bois d’ arc (sometimes
called Osage Orange & Horse Apple) tree. Many houses
rest on Bois d’ arc trunks in North Texas area, and many
farmers/ranchers use them for fence post—they last a
lifetime. Very durable & difficult with which to work. The
Osage Indians in Oklahoma used them to make their bows,
and were known as the best & most durable. Anyway, it
looks great–and, where did you get the letters:WERST?
Hey David, I love it! That looks awesome! Good job….
Only in Texas will you read a great article about a pecan tree fallin’ on your donkey barn. I love this great nation of Texas!!
Good job David! I love it! Soooo creative!! 🙂
