Real Texas Quarterbacks

Does Texas really rule the football world?

Yes, and Yes.  Some compelling evidence of Texan dominance is that the two top teams in college football are led by Texas worldTexans at the University of Alabama and The University of Texas.   Greg McElroy of Southlake Carroll, Texas and Colt McCoy of Tuscola, Texas have led their teams to the pinnacle of collegiate football’s national championship game.  We will all get to watch the game January 7, 2010.

It’s only fitting that two Texans should battle it out for the ultimate #1 ranking.  It’s right.  It is just. It’s a sign that all is right with the world with Texas and Texans in the lead.  For us, it’s a win-win situation.  We had rather UT win the National Championship, but if they don’t we can still claim braggin rights ….of sorts.

Greg McElroy, QB 1 of Alabama,  starred for Texas national  power Southlake Carroll High School and took over as a starter for Southlake in his senior season after playing behind Chase Daniel, the 2004 National High School Player of the Year who went on to star at Missouri.  McElroy racked up 4,687 yards with 56 touchdowns and only nine interceptions in his one year as a starter at Southlake Carroll.  The 56 touchdowns set a new Texas high school record …that is until Graham Harrell came along and broke that record.  He led his team to the Texas Class 5A state title, the team’s third in four seasons, and a mythical high school national championship in 2005 … named Offensive Player of the Year in Texas … completed 321-of-450 pass attempts and ran for over 700 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior … completed 21-of-31 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns en route to MVP honors in the state championship win over Katy.

The he ended up at Alabama. In his post game interview after the #2 Crimson Tide ran all over previously #1 ranked Florida, he stated that the reason a player goes to Alabama is to play in big games and for national championships. He was articulate and a heck of a quarterback.   Alabama is a force.

That being said, while I admire McElroy, he knows I can’t root for his team to win the big one. All us Real Texans know why we like him and admire him and wish him well (he’s a junior and will be back), we just can’t hope for his success in the national championship game.  He’s a dandy!  He just plays for the wrong team right now.  I liked him right away in his interview with the female sports person on the field he said “Yes ma’am” in response to a question.  He also pointed out he was from Texas right away in the interview.  Gotta like a kid like that who is big time, but remembers his manners and his roots.

Colt McCoy, QB 1 of The University of Texas,  on the other hand is another small town Texas boy who is also at the top of the heap in collegiate football.  We’ve all heard plenty of McCoy stories and he’s been a success due to hard work and perseverance.  You just have to admire all that in a homegrown Texas boy.  He is polite, he is reverent, and a great competitor who finds a way to win.  And just listening to him you can tell he’s a small town boy who has hit the big time in football.  He’s genuine.  He’s real.  He’s a real Texan and we wish him and his Texas Longhorns the best.

I guess it was last year I read something that said there were 22 Texas born and raised quarterbacks leading division I schools in 2008.

This year in the national championship game, Texas is the underdog……….again.

God Bless Texas and Texans.

A  fan of Real Texans, wherever they are

Don’t forget, as so many have, a Real Texas Team from where the West begins: Texas Christian University: Undefeated and playing in the Separate, But Equal Bowl in Arizona.
The Horned Frogs are driven by kids from Maud, Snyder, LaVernia, Burnet, Missouri City (yea, it’s in Texas) Navasota, Edna., Katy, Irving, Garland, Midland (I guess Midland’s in Texas), Odessa, and so on.

Hey Vivian and thanks for bringing up TCU! I love the TCU Horned Frogs. And Yes, Midland is smack in the heart of Real Texas. I had the pleasure of becoming friends with Buddy Illes a couple of years ago and became an instant TCU fan. Illes caught the pass that beat UT out of the national championship in the early 60’s. These small town scrappers are my favorite kind of football players.

Thanks Vivian for mentioning the TCU Horned toads, Texans
should be equally proud of them although they’ll probably never
get recognition of TU. Also, keep an eye on Baylor’s
cracker-jack QB Robert Griffin (sadly got injured early this
season), but hopefully has a great future. Joe Barnes
former pro from Reagan County (Big Lake) told me that
Griffin is the “real deal,” & Joe knows a good QB when
he sees one. TEXAS has the best football per sq. ft. in USA!
