Veteran’s  Day 2010

Veteran’s Day is tomorrow, November 11, 2010.

Many of you know I remember my friend Robert Worth on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day every year.  Robert was KIA in Vietnam December 19, 1970.  His helicopter hit the ground inverted near Kien Long, about 135 miles south of Saigon.

In my mind he is forever young.

Remembering Robert on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day keeps him in my mind and heart.  Yes there are thousands of others I think of with gratitude and they are all worthy of remembrance.  It’s just that I prefer to keep this particular memory as personal as possible. I remember his mother and step-dad, his sister, his nieces, and his oh so very young wife he left behind.  I remember his car, his haircut, his triple flip off the low board, his laughter and his bravery. I remember trips we took, places of intrigue and adventure we enjoyed, how we worked together in the back shop of a hot metal newspaper, and his sacrifice.

I remember Robert Worth on this Veteran’s Day and appreciate him and all those who have served.

David, what a great video. Thank you for posting. The sacrifices of our veterans should never be taken for granted. As a mother, and a history enthusiast, it’s frustrating when my children bring home school work on other customs and religions, and on foreign artists and composers, and very little on our own history.

I want my kids to learn about Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. They need to know about Valley Forge, the Hanoi Hilton , Fallujah, and the Bataan Death March. But it’s not happening in the schools.

Parents and grandparents have got to be the ones to instill patriotism and the idea of American exceptionalism in our children. The next generation must learn and never forget the sacrifices our veterans have made for all of us.

Thanks again for the post and reminding us of the importance of tomorrow.

To paraphrase Senator/actor Fred Thompson: No nation in the history of mankind has shed more of its blood in the defense of liberty (both ours & foreigners) than the USA.

This is the land of the free, because of the brave.

Thank you Robert Worth and all those who were & are willing to sacrifice (deceased or survivor) so we can play on the computer, cook our favorite meal, enjoy our family, go to the mall, go vote, go to church, take a Sunday drive or just lolly-gag as I often do. We ARE indebted to you!!

I also remember Robert, and also always remember another Reagan County High School student that was killed in Vietnam, Walter Lowe who was killed when he stepted on a land mine. Walter played football for the Owls.

Served with several who didn’t make it back from wherever. Albert Tijerina of San Angelo stands out because, as an upperclassman, he befriended a bewildered freshman
(“fish” Worsham) from Angelo. He died trying to rescue others when his Jolly Green Giant was shot down.

Thanks for this video Dave. I was very fortunate to have served 23 years with the United States Navy in a time when there were really no major conflicts.

No one can discount the unselfish act of courage our veterans give each and every day so that we might live free and by the worlds standards, in wealth in still, the greatest nation on earth.
