This week I’m going to introduce a couple of different performers here on Real Texas Blog music video Friday. They are famous, but not exactly mainstream famous.
These performers are Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez and Chris Rea.
One night I was with a special someone in a special place and the song Wild Thing came on the radio. We were parked beside one of the only trees in the circle drive area in my community near the county park sitting out on the hood of my car watching the stars and listening to music. There was probably only one station we received back in those days, KOMA. Anytime I hear that song, it brings back that place in time with a special redhead.
I didn’t know Wild Thing was written by Chip Taylor. The Troggs took Wild Thing to a hit single that is still popular. Chip also wrote the song Angel of the Morning. Some of you actually know who Chip Taylor is, but I’m not all that sophisticated. Chip Taylor is the stage name for John Wesley Voight. You might know him as the brother of actor Jon Voight or the uncle of Angelina Jolie.
Here’s some real trivia for you. Remember the song I Can Make It With You? It was sung by the Pozo Seco Singers, and written by Chip Taylor. He has a ton of other big hits: Try (Just a little bit harder) Janis Joplin; Any Way That You Want Me-The Troggs, Evie Sands, Juice Newton…..and lots more. Carrie Rodriguez has a voice that is just great and she can play a fiddle like any pro I ever heard. The two make a perfect combination. Carrie Rodriguez will get a full Music Video Friday all by herself sometime in the future.
Chris Rea is an Englishman for gosh sakes. What is he doing on Real Texas Music Video Friday? It’s because his song Texas just hits a hot spot with me. And I love the video.
I checked….These two groups and these two songs are the most played songs on my iTunes list. I just keep repeating them to listen over and over.
Laredo with Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez….
Here they are with Wild Thing…
And here are The Troggs….a few years after the big hit
Texas, by Chris Rea. It’s one of my favorites of all time.

Dang! You did good this Friday David. I am with you, Chris Rea singing “Texas” is pretty good. I learned a little something also, never even heard of Chip Taylor. Hard to believe he’s a Voight! But, he looks and sounds just like his brother. You’ve never failed to amaze me. Keep up the good work and keep’em coming!
A new ritual has developed in my life. I get up on Saturday morning, cook my waffles, get me a cup of steaming, hot coffee, go to my office and watch Video Friday…two or three times. Thanks David for making it easy on those of us too lazy to look this stuff up on our own! Especially loved this one!
