Hayes Carll is another one of those guys with a unique Texas sound. You either like him or you don’t. As I explained last week, I’m a lyrics guy and just because Dylan can’t sing like Merle, doesn’t mean he can’t write a great song. I first heard Hayes Carll on Imus In The Morning and he just hung around and sang his songs. I loved ’em all. The person I was in bed with looked at me like I was crazy for listening to him…..and enjoying what I heard.
His songs Beaumont and She Left Me For Jesus just blew me away.
He sounds good if you think Kris Kristopherson can sing. He also sounds good if you think Bob Dylan can sing. And since Ernest Tubb is one of my old time country favorites, I can listen to and enjoy Hayes Carll any day of the week.
Hayes is a Texas native and is from The Woodlands. He started playing guitar at age 15 and was influenced by Kris Kristopherson, John Prine, Bob Dylan, and Jack Kerouac. Guess that’s why I liked him right off the bat. Yep, it was the poetry that got me.
He has written some songs with two more of my favorite songwriters, Guy Clark and Ray Wiley Hubbard.
Here he sings All The Way from Beaumont….
She left me for Jesus…..
Drunken Poets Dream……
Yes, we’ll be moving back to some of the more traditional artists in the near future. Just thought I’d throw in a few ringers some of you might not have heard before.
I’m David out in Real Texas
My ears are still ringing from listening

David,
You’re right. He can write but he can’t sing.
Hayes plays in the Austin area often. He is a great live performer. One of his best lines (to me) is “when push comes to shove, I always end up on the floor”…
