Guy Clark has made a lot of singers rich and famous
Guy Clark was born in Monahans in 1941 and you just can’t get much more Real Texas than that. He says he was influenced by Spanish songs and the songs he heard in West Texas. To me that means the small town joints that advertise dancing/beer often hand painted on the side of the building. I seen a hundred of ’em and been inside about half that many in my day.
Guy Clark has released over twenty albums and has written a heck of a lot of hit singles. You just can’t write anything about Texas music without mentioning Guy Clark. He is even an experience ‘luthier’. I understand, I didn’t know what the word meant either. In our context, it means a maker of guitars or stringed instruments.
His biggest commercial successes have to be associated with Jerry Jeff Walker who performed the Guy Clark songs, L.A. Freeway and Desperados Waiting for a Train. I like both songs very much, but ‘Desperados Waiting for a Train’ really hit home with me because of the lyrics. I had been a pool hall aficionado in my early days of high school and seeing and knowing the old men ‘with beer guts and dominoes’ was a reality to me. They really did have tobacco stains on their chins and shirts. They really did give us money for the girls when we organized an impromptu trip to south of the border.
So, Guy Clark is just my one of my very favorites based on his ability to fine tune a lyric along with a melody. He is a master story teller with some famous friends. He is a Real Texan all the say.
Here he is on Letterman with a few of those friends:
