The Best Band in the SEC

Texas A&M has made it official.  They are leaving the Big 12 and moving to the Southeast Conference.

There is a clickable link at the bottom of this article that shows this week’s music video.

When the Texas Aggies play other schools in the SEC, at halftime the fans there will also see a mighty ‘T for Texas’ in the form of the Texas Aggie Band marching down the field playing the Aggie War Hymn.  It is an impressive sight.  I’m pleased those SEC schools will get a big dose of Texas and the Aggies are just the teams to give it to them.

There has been a lot said of  Texas A&M’s move to the SEC.  The discussions range from why they actually moved out of the Big 12 Conference, can they even win a game in the SEC, can they compete at all, and will they continue to play in the best rivalry game in the USA bar none?

That rivalry game would be Texas A&M vs. The University of Texas.  It is an important rivalry that just got even better.

I’m not a graduate of either school.  That was the result of a bad choice made many years ago and I can’t change it now.  Both my brother and sister attended UT in Austin along with extended family and friends, but many other family members and close personal friends have attended Texas A&M. We are a family divided.

I have to confess that I myself am an Aggie sympathizer.  And if you have ever attended a home game in college station at Kyle Field, you would have to bleed orange blood to not be moved by the extreme school spirit and esprit de corps demonstrated at every Aggie Football game. We are the Aggies, the Aggies are We.

I not only go to watch the football game, but also to observe the Corps (not corpse as in a dead body as our president pronounces it) march into the stadium.  I closely watch the Ross Volunteers, the Parsons Mounted Cavalry, and the rest of the cadets march around the stadium in military precision.  I know how many hours they have marched to be able to do what they do.  I know and many others know because we have done so ourselves either at Texas A&M or in our nation’s military as in my case.

We never leave at halftime because that’s when the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band marches onto the field.  I actually get choked up watching them.  I know they practice as many hours as the football team and maybe more.  They are a sight to see.

I don’t have any idea how the Aggie teams will do competing in the SEC, but  I already know which band will be the dominate band in the SEC.  Hands down they are already the best.

Click here and see if you don’t agree with me.  Its worth watching:

What a great post. Thank you. You’re right, we don’t know what the SEC has in store for us, but we are so excited. The naysayers who crow about how A&M will get its backside whooped week after week during football season, obviously weren’t around in the late ’80s and early to mid ’90s. Either that, or they are UT grads wildly indignant A&M is turning its back on the Longhorn Conference. I’ve met both. Give us time.

You are so right about the band. We call it The Pride of Aggieland. Nothing quite like it.

By the way, David, being an Aggie is as much about spirit and heart as it is about a diploma. I think you’re a good Ag. Gig ’em.

Hey Shannon. I enjoy reading of your young football players. Yes, I’m a graduate of what is now Texas Sate University. Good school, but if I had a do over, it would not be my choice today…..

While I don’t really care much anymore about who wins what game and where, I think it may be a good thing for the Aggies to move to a new conference. For all of their existence, they have had to compare everything to UT. They always would say that whatever they were speaking of was better than UT- now, they might be able to develop their own identity, and no longer feel they were having to convince people that they were not quite good enough. (actually, it has always been true)

As a former member of this proud unit, I thank you for highlighting one of their drills.
The SEC will be suprised as we’ve never lost a halftime. Not so good for their concession sales though, as so many folks refuse to leave their seats during the band’s performances.
Thanks again, David.

Spoken like a true Longhorn…..but the answer to that is yes! They are undefeated at halftime and will continue to stay undefeated.

Even if you bleed burnt orange you can’t help but be moved by the Spirit of Aggieland. I, my wife, daughter, mother, brother, brother-in-law, 2 sisters-in-law, niece, nephew, and father-in-law are all products of UT. My father and another nephew were Aggies. I love the Horns, but I hope that the Aggies retain their traditions, patriotism, and spirit; and that my grandchildren choose to go to A&M.

At least the half-time show will be new to the SEC. Certainly they’re talented and work hard, but the A&M half-time hasn’t changed much over the years. I realize, for many, the theme from Patton is something they can listen to over and over and over again. And again. And again. But its not my thing. All the best to them in the new league. Hopefully College Station will be good hosts to NASCAR nation and the tail-gaters that accompany SEC football. As a bonus, the baseball team and basketball teams will have an easier conference to compete with.

And Dave, I hear you about the college regret thing. I value my Angelo State education/degree but wonder what might have been if I’d spent that $4 a semester hour tuition someplace else.

Angelo State is a good school! I probably would have spent any extra tuition money at some local den of iniquity!
