For Real Texans of a certain age

When anyone says “of a certain age” they are generally referring to someone a little older than the general population.  Anyone in Real Texas who remembers Joni Mitchell is ‘of that certain age’.

Joni Mitchell sings with a slight accent and that accent is not Texan.  She a Canadian folk singer and painter who has had an interesting life.  She has been called possibly one of the most influential female singers/composers of the 20th Century.  However, she probably would not have been a good fit in Real Texas during the heyday of her popularity.  Her folksongs were fantastic, but she always seemed to have some sort of protest going on.

She was born in 1943 in Alberta, Canada.  Her mother was a teacher and her father was an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force.  She contracted polio at age  9 during the Canadian epidemic and that is when she also started singing.  She taught herself ukelele and guitar and starting performing at parties, bonfires, and coffeehouses.  She was friends with singer Harry Chapin but went on to Toronto to become a folksinger.

She was a favorite of the folksinging crowd and quite an accomplished artist.  She did all the artwork for her album covers and then made friends with David Crosby of Crosby, Stills, and Nash fame.

Included this week are a couple of duets with Johnny Cash.  Enjoy.

Here are a few of her songs from the times when a few of us, of a certain age, were younger.

And many of you remember this one also

One more duet
