Real Texas Music

Emmylou Harris has to be at the top of my list as far as music is concerned.  The fact that she sings some country, with a folk music flair, just makes it even better.  Heck, she even has such a hillbilly country accent in some of her songs she could fit in nearly anywhere I go.

She come by her accent honest.  She’s from Birmingham, Alabama.  She sings folk, country rock, country folk, and some bluegrass.  Her other name is songbird.  She graduated from her high school class as valedictorian, then went off to the Universithy of North Carolina to study music.  She studied the styles of Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez.  Guess that’s where the folk music influence came from.

She worked with her true love Gram Parsons and his death affected her profoundly.  She grieved for Parsons deeply and the words to her song From Boulder to Birmingham tell only a small part of the depth of feeling on her loss.

I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life in his saving grace.
I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see, I could see your face.

Here she is singing that moving song, one of my favorites:

Pancho & Lefty

Get to know her a little better
