King of Texas

Is David Werst the King of  Texas?

It did happen on Christmas Day, 2009.

You can see in the video above that we were ‘home alone’  this Christmas with no kids or other family around.  They all came Thanksgiving and we had a wonderful time.  Then we went a week ago to deliver presents and have early Christmas in the Austin area.  Even so, having the puppies at Christmas was entertainment enough.  Bowie, the larger dog, decided that Christmas was all about him.  He kept stealing the presents.  His favorite so far is a talking ball he carries around in his mouth.  The ball says things like ‘You’re a good boy!’ and ‘Go boy go.’  Enjoy the video.

But back to being King of Texas.  Let me explain.  December 25 is my birthday and although some have said it is a bad time for a birthday, I’ve always enjoyed it.

  • It’s an easy date to remember.
  • Everyone else around me is also aware of the importance of the date.
  • People are in a festive mood.
  • It’s a great time of year in general.

So, you can see why I have always enjoyed having a birthday on Christmas Day.  And this year,  it was one of the best ever birthdays.  I decided to take a cue from Ramona and drag the birthday bit out for a couple of weeks.

I did so this year under the guise of celebrating Christmas and getting in the Christmas spirit.  A week ago we went to Fredericksburg and Austin.  Fredericksburg  is a favorite location of mine and they know how to dress up as a community and get in the holiday spirit.  We attended a performance at the Rockbox Theater that was full of Christmas songs and festive performances.  Great entertainment!

Then we traveled on to Austin where we delivered Christmas presents and Ramona prepared a Vietnamese soup dish called ‘Pho’ for the family.  It was a big hit and de-licious.  After visiting Central Market and getting a new supply of fresh food items, we headed back to West Texas.  She loves Central Market and Whole Foods and as a bona fide ‘foodie’ she was in her element.  She just loves to cook…and believe me, that is a good thing.

We invited an old cowboy friend over for dinner a couple of days before Christmas Day and it was another great time of food and fellowship.

Christmas Eve, we went out to dinner and later went to see Avatar the movie in 3D.  It was a great movie full of  super special effects and we were amazed.

On Christmas Day, I got several phone calls and comments from the #1 son and relatives and Facebook friends wishing me happy birthday.  It’s great to reconnect with old friends and family you don’t see often enough.

Christmas Day we got up late, sat by the fire, and opened a few presents.  Even the doggies got some presents and ran around like crazy dogs.  They were genuinely excited over a few chew toys and that ball that talks to them when it is moved.   We had a leisurely day.  Ramona fixed blackened prime rib and it was fantastic. It just doesn’t get any better than all that.

It was prime rib, ya’ll!

I’m slowly recovering.

Ramona spoiled me terribly.  She’s good at that, and I am grateful for it.

Now I know what it is like to be ‘King for a Day,’ even it was only for one day.

Yes,  tomorrow,  It’s back to reality and time to take out the trash and rake the leaves, and clean the chicken pen.

But I’ll always remember that  for a few days in December, and especially on December 25,  I felt like the King of Texas.  It was a pretty good feeling.

Congratulations Dave. It sounds like your Christmas and Birthday were wonderful celebrations and you are indeed a lucky man. I am also certainly glad to know someone other than Jesus that was born on December 25 — not that I am making comparisons, of course. My birthday happens to be on November 26 and this year it was on Thanksgiving so I can relate to some of your feelings.

I must say however that I was just a little disappointed when I read the title — “King of Texas”. I was hoping that you were going to throw your hat in the ring for King of the Republic of Texas. You know, a good, kindly, compassionate King could remove all the problems we are currently experiencing with the sleezy, lying, thieving, immoral, etc. politicians on all levels of government.

It’s not too late to change your mind.
