Gruene: Gently resisting change

That’s their motto.

Gently resisting change.  I kinda like that motto.

We’ve been re-exploring the hill country lately.  Let me explain a little bit more.  I went to school at SWT.  Yep, walked out of West Texas and stepped straight into 1967 at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.

Everybody knows they changed the name to Texas State University, right?  When I first went there, there were around 3,000 or so students.  Now there are probably 20,000.  Or more.

I literally walked through one big door of Flowers Hall and straight on through and out the back door to a big anti-war rally in front of the Mustang fountain on campus.

I stood there dumbfounded.  Never had seen anything like that before. We didn’t get the opportunity to protest much out in Real Texas.  Might get quirted or hit with a hot shot.  I spent five years there and moved back to West Texas.  Those protesters didn’t do a very good job.  I went and did a little Army, then went back and finished up my degree.

Been out here in Real Texas ever since.

Since the recent visit to Gruene Hall, I’ve been thinking about the Hill Country more lately.  Did you know Nolan Ryan celebrated his 50th birthday at Gruene Hall?  And the dance scene from the movie Michael starring John Travolta was filmed there.  I love the place…..lots of memories there.  The music, dancin’ and beer drinkin’ that go on there are not bad either.  trip pics 005

We have switched over to the Kerrville VA Health Care System and love those folks there and at Audie Murphy in San Antonio.  So, we have been exploring Fredericksburg, Harper, Ingram, Comfort, Helotes, Kerrville, Bandera, San Marcos, Gruene, New Braunfels, Boerne, and areas of San Antonio.  I’m kinda getting reacquainted.  Like I told one friend, I hadn’t seen Gruene Hall in the daytime (or sober) ever before my last visit.

I kinda like that country down there.  Ramona likes Nagelin’s Bakery, the oldest bakery in Texas located in New Braunfels.  She buys their hamburger buns and makes all kinds of good stuff with them.  She also likes the Shops at La Cantera.  I don’t like ’em as much as she does.

I like the Guadalupe River.  She also likes the Hill Country in general.  I told her it was the very next best thing to West Texas.  In fact, they try to out-Texas nearly everybody else and I really like that attitude.

Plus, my name kinda fits in places like New Braunfels, host of the Wurstfest.  Let’s see, David Werst……Wurstfest.  Bet there is an old German in my past somewhere.  I did get Ramona to spend one night in the Faust Hotel a few years back.  I enjoyed it a lot due to the historical nature of it and all.  She would rather have a little more modern room.  I fit in pretty good in Fredericksburg too.  Lots of old Germans there, but not as many as New Braunfels.

It has been good to get reacquainted with the hill country.  We ate a Mexican dinner buffet in Comfort, barbecue at Smitty’s in Lockhart, and always enjoy a Reuben sandwich at Wheeler’s in Fredericksburg.  We  visited the golf course at Lady Bird park and collected 22 different kinds of basil at various locations for her cooking experiments.  And I already told you about the private label wine in Fredericksburg.  And I’ve got a couple of more wine stops to make in Comfort.

Would I consider living in that area of the paradise of Texas?  Yep, with the right kind of water, creek, or river on the property, we sure would.  It would take a lot to beat what we have, but it would be closer to other relatives.  Oh, and the one concession to modern times?  It would have to have very high speed internet.

Wouldn’t want anyone to miss a post on Real Texas Blog would we?

I’m David Werst

Also Gently resisting change.

You have to be from Real Texas to know what getting quirted means.
