A Real Texas Wedding

The bride was beautiful and the groom was handsome as two Texas families joined together to marry off their children last weekend on Granny Grigar’s farm near East Bernard, Texas.

They are now Mr. and Mrs. Joe David Werst.  They were Callie Johnson and Joe David Werst.  Callie is the daughter of Rick Johnson and Connie Janis.  Joe David is the son Wedding 056of David and Ramona Werst and Alicia Werst.  They went on a honeymoon cruise on the Carnival Conquest to the Caribbean.  They just got back.  They live in Lockhart and both are gainfully employed.

The wedding date seemed like it would never arrive, but the closer it got,  the more time was needed to make everything happen.  Without a doubt,  the bride’s extended family did most of the heavy lifting.  There was a wedding shower near Seguin several weeks before the wedding that we attended and it was held at the home of an Aunt and Uncle of the bride.  Great folks.

The bride’s grandmother opened her farm home and grounds to the visitors and was most gracious in her hospitality.  Another Uncle and Aunt provided lots of music and brought their entire band, The Fossils.  There were more Uncles and Aunts, cousins, and friends who all pitched in.  The family came together and washed dishes, loaded and unloaded trailers full of chairs, tables, tents and more.  They came from as far as Washington State and Florida for the wedding and pitched in as a family to make it all happen.

My new daughter-in-law

What a great group of people!

Joe David was an only child.

He isn’t anymore.  He has a rather large extended family that has welcomed him and made him part of their own family.

Here’s a few photos.  Joe is a big boy, about 6’3″ and 230 or so.  Callie is tall also.  She will be a fantastic daughter-in-law.

Many of you already know Joe David, you just didn’t know that you did.  He was the big hitter on the Big Lake Owls team featured in the movie “The Rookie”.  An actor portrayed him in the movie which starred Dennis Quaid and told the story of Jimmy Morris, the small town coach who went on to pitch in the big leagues.  Coach Morris is a great guy and the movie was a big deal for a while.  If you have the DVD, you can see Joe David’s interview in the additional features section.  It gave several folks their 15 minutes of fame and was a lot of fun.

It was the first barefoot wedding I’ve ever attended.  I wondered how everyone would be comfortable at 3:00 in the afternoon at an outdoor wedding in the Houston area.

Everything went fine and it was a great wedding.  Lots of happiness and laughter.  You can see lots more photos on my Facebook page in the albums sections. Just friend me on the main page of the blog to access the photos.

So, that is part of what I’ve been doing lately even though we all know that fathers of the groom are mainly expected to just stay out of the way, not drink too much, and not be embarrassing in any way.  I accomplished most of those tasks.

They make a real cute couple, don’t they?

Congratulations! Now don’t start beggin’ for grandkids right away, but when they do have their first, tell ’em to keep ’em comin’, cuz grandkids are the third best thing in the world.

A barefoot wedding sounds like the right way to get married in the Texas heat. Guess they must not have those grass burrs that grow around Uvalde in Southwest Texas. Congratulations! It looks like it was beautiful and everyone was happy and having a good time.
I agree with what Rusty said about the grandkids.
