Florida Vs. Texas
There’s a phrase somewhere in this story that says a lot. It talks about the Abilene High Eagles suffering their first defeat since 2008. And knowing Texas High School football like I do, that loss by Abilene to a team from Florida was heart wrenching for the coaches, the players, their parents, the students, the waitress at the Dairy Queen, and for several counties on either side of Abilene.
They get a second chance tonight, and the stakes are just as high this week as before.
Just a reminder that Abilene High School Eagles will be playing the Plant High School Panthers tonight on ESPNU. I get the game on DirecTV at channel 208 starting at 7:00p.m. Texas time. I will be tuned in.
Plant High School is the defending 5A champion of Florida and Abilene is the defending 5A Champion of Texas. It’s a 1,300 mile trip to Texas from Florida and Plant coach Robert Weiner said “We’re going in there to ‘ball out’ and give it everything we’ve got.”
My thoughts are that the Florida boys will need to give it everything they’ve got because the Texas boys do that very thing every Friday night.
All that being said, Plant High School is among the top teams in the USA. Now they are going to experience a little smash mouth Texas Football tonight, Thursday night, September 16, 2010 in Abilene, Texas. Click here on this link to read more about the game. Last week a Cocoa, Florida team shocked the Eagles and beat them 21-24.
After opening against Belton quarterback David Ash (Texas), the Abilene High Eagles were tested by the Franklinton, La., duo of quarterback Terrence Magee (LSU) and running back Josh Robinson (Mississippi State). Last week saw Cocoa, Fla., running back Chevelle Buie (Rutgers) break loose for three long touchdowns as AHS suffered its first loss since 2008.
If the Eagles lose tonight, they may have to move…….and the Plant team is a good one.
In the second week of Texas High School football, the storied Permian Panthers defeated the Spanaway Bethel Braves Washington State team 39-21. Seems everyone wants a little piece of Texas these days. Yes, they traveled to Texas to play the game. And they will also travel to play here next year.
Good luck and welcome to Texas!

If Abilene had been healthy last week, they would never have lost. And they did play smash mouth football last night and shut down the Plant boys and their All American QB going to Alabama and their All American running back going wherever he wants to.
