Christmas gifts for gardeners

Here it is December already  and some of you Real Texans have not done all your shopping yet.  I’ve purchased a few things online and a few things from stores, but finding just the right gift is tricky.  However, I looked in my own inventory of products and came up with a perfect gift for mom at Christmas.  It’s Garden Tools.

Yep, simple Garden tools that can be used year ’round are a great gift.  It’s a Backyard Genie 3 Piece Garden Tool Gift Set.

Here’s a disclaimer:  This is a shameless plug for my own product we have developed.  We started this product development over a year ago and another serious hospital stay in April of this year sidetracked us until now.

Some of you know Ramona and I moved to the San Antonio area to be closer to her doctors.  She is some better now….thank you….and we now live about 15 miles outside of San Antonio, about the same distance from Boerne, and again about the same distance from Bandera.  It’s the Texas Hill Country at its finest and the weather and climate are agreeable.  The summer was a little too agreeable.  Hottern’ hell actually.  We moved in here in June and set about making this 3 acres our home.  And it is 23 minutes to the VA medical center if we need to get there in a hurry (hopefully not).

The new house had a dilapidated garden area which I transformed into a Square Foot Garden complex after reading Mel Bartholomew’s book, Square Foot Gardening.  It is now the first week of December and we still have a 4’x16′ bed full of Roma tomatoes.  We have over 70 plants in that bed and they are all loaded with good looking’ Roma tomatoes.  Every bit of that bed was planted using only this Backyard Genie Garden Tool Set.

What you get…

A 3-piece set with a trowel, a transplanter, and a rake.  It all comes shipped to you from Amazon and it is in an attractive boxed set.  We designed the box also and had this set of garden tools custom manufactured for us.  They feature an ergonomic handle on each tool and are designed to have plenty of digging power.BackYardGenie_Handle  I tried to beat ’em up and bend them when I was planting, but they held up to all the abuse I could heap on them.

The Transplanter has an ergonomic soft grip rubber handle and features graduated etched-in markings in inches to get correct planting septs or seed planting depths.  It has a narrower blade than the heavy-duty trowel.

The trowel is a heavy duty tool designed for years of use, not months as some of its cheaper competitor’s garden tool sets.  I even used it as a hammer to loosed up some hard packed soil and it didn’t back down one bit.  And again, the handle has a sod rubber grip that is easy to hold and soft on the hands.  this set is a good gift for women gardeners.  (Older men like me also).

The rake is also a substantial tool and I used it to smooth the soil after digging the planting hole.  There was a lot of soil that needed to be smoothed out and it was an easy task with this rake.  Yes, the same handle is easy on the hands and easy to work with for a long period of time.

I have to confess that before developing these products, I never even thought about such things as digging power, soft rubber ergonomic handles that can be used for a long time in the garden, and tough metal that won’t bend after a few months use.  We designed these tools to be used for seasons, not just a few planting sessions.

I’m settling in here after being a West Texas resident for a lifetime and having a few friends in the area helps.  One life-long friend of mine lives only a 20 minute drive from my house.  ‘Course he plays golf 8 days a week and I haven’t had time to do that yet, but we are getting there.

We are in the ‘marketing’ phase of developing this particular product and I’ll keep you advised of how we are doing.  In the meantime, if you think this is a good gift idea, give it a try.  It has a money back guarantee but I’ll have to say I don’t think you will have to use that feature.

I am gettting back to blogging more and won’t have another shameless plug for at least another year or unless I have another great brainstorm.

At any rate, it’s good to be semi-settled here.

I’m David

…Still out here in Real Texas
