I’m kinda upset that someone taped (is that still a word? OK, digitally recorded) Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones trash talking Tim Tebow and Bill Parcells. That’s hitting a little below the belt as far as most Real Texans out here are concerned. We believe we have the right to drunkenly spout off whenever and wherever we want to. Loudly too!
What a coincidence! It was just the other day down at the coffee shop, the local bastion of information true or false, that someone was trash
talking Jerry Jones. They are still mad about him firing Tom Landry and how the Cowboys haven’t been the same since. We have long memories out here in Real Texas. But it’s a good thing the conversation wasn’t recorded. There was some mention about the best part of Jerry Jones having ran down………well, never mind. It’s not something to repeat at the grocery store.
But the fact remains that a feller can’t get a little drunk and spout off some without someone recording it, digitally archiving it, flip videoing it, Zi8 with a remote microphone, or even using the voice memo feature on your iPhone. What is this world coming to? Is nothing sacred anymore….even drunk talk and trash talking about sports?
I grew up in a world where it was common practice to get a little tooted and then get in the mood to call your best friends…usually at 2:00 a.m. or so and want them to talk about whatever was on your mind. It usually ended with how much the drunk person loved the semi-awake person.
So, I may not agree with Jerry Jones…..I’m still mad about the Landry thing too…..but even madder about Bum Phillips and the Oilers…….But I will defend his right to get drunk and spout off loudly and obnoxiously…without being recorded.
I also hereby order my friends to turn off their digital answering machines and all recording devices when they see my number come up at 2:00 a.m.
I’m David out in Real Texas

Reputation is what people think you are.
Character is what you are.

It couldn’t have happened to a better guy. I’m still mad too, but three Super Bowl rings and the money (and will) to buy talent has helped ease the pain.
