March is Texas History Month

We Texans are almost always ready to celebrate something, so this month we can celebrate Texas History Month.  March is one of the most significant months as far as Texas is concerned.

Texas Independence Day is celebrated on March 2.

The Alamo fell on March 6, 1836.

And Texans were fighting for Texas Independence nearly every day somewhere in Texas during the years 1836 and before.  Actually Santa Anna and his army rode into San Antonio in late February and the siege of the Alamo lasted 13 days until the final battle left all the defenders dead at the Alamo.  We all know that from Texas History class.

How will you be celebrating Texas History Month this year?

Next year you can look for a Texas Independence Day celebration near you and attend.  It’s already gone by us this year.   There are several located at various places around the Great State.  And your local saloon or beverage establishment just might have a Texas Independence Day celebration going on as part of a promo of their business.

Another way to celebrate and get in the mood for Texas History Month is to send me your favorite “Texas Proverb.”

What is a Texas proverb?

A Texas Proverb is simply a Texas saying…..

If you are talkin’ about someone that’s a bit crazy you say:  ”He’s got a big hole in his screen door”  or  ”She’s two sandwiches short of a picnic”  or maybe even “the Lights are on, but no one’s home”.  That’s just the way we Tawk out here.

Someone who is experienced might say:  ”This ain’t my first rodeo.”

You get the idea.

To help get you in the mood to celebrate Texas History Month, send me your favorite Texas sayin’.

When it rains you might say it was a….”Toad Choker”  ”Frog Strangler”  ”Turd Floater”

We can have a little fun with this.  I might even include your saying in my new eBook, How To Tawk Texan.

I’m David out in Real Texas

Where in the summertime it gets “hotter than a stolen tamale”

Here’s a few that come to my mind……
“Welcome to Texas, now go home” …”Beautify Texas,Put a Yankee on the bus”……”I’m from Texas, what country are you from?”…..”Save a horse, ride a cowbow”…..”Screw y’all, I’m from Texas”……

Don’t know any proverbs, David, but I’m “fixin to” tell you that the best place to celebrate Texas Independence day is at Washington-on-the-Brazos which is just about 20 miles from Brenham where I grew up. They even celebrate on the 2nd like they are supposed to. You can read about the celebration in the Brenham Banner Press.

Indeed, we are doubly blessed to be Texans. Being an
American is GREAT—but, if you want the best icing on
the top you just gotta live in Texas. I’ve lived in Dallas,
McKinney, Richardson, Decatur/Boyd, Big Lake, Amarillo & Van Alstyne, & I am here to tell you It’s ALL good. I just
can’t imagine living in New Jersey, Vermont, etc. I also went
to SFA Univ. in Nacodoches (did I spell that right–& was
it not the 1st State Capitol??). Even better had we
kept all the “Tejas territory” Mexico had and remained an
independent Republic. The stupid Yankees would have
probably sent us foreign aid although we wouldn’t need it.
Seems we’ve always kept our financial house in better order
than the rest of the nation!!
