Where Is Big Lake, Texas
Where in “tarnation” is Big Lake, Texas?
A lady asked me a few days ago.
“It’s out there in west Texas,” I replied,
Between Fort Worth and El Paso.
Just eighteen miles west of Barnhart,
About halfway between Ozona and Garden City.
It’s the county seat of Reagan County,
And when the wind blows, the air is often gritty.
You just go west on U. S. Highway 67,
And enjoy your leisurely, scenic drive.
Just keep on going west past San Angelo,
Sooner or later you will arrive.
Please keep in mind as you travel,
This traveler’s advice with you I will share,
To get there, you need to be going there,
Because it’s not on your way to anywhere!

Thanks for another poem M.T. Whallette.
I was editor/publisher of the Big Lake Wildcat for 27 years and it was a common question. “Big Lake. Where is that?” Occasionally, I would mention that Reagan County is the home of Santa Rita No. 1, the discovery well of the fabulous Permian Basin and that would get a hint of recognition.
And on occasion, I would explain that Big Lake was out in West Texas, which was in the ‘Real’ part of Texas. It’s the part of Texas that is so large some say it includes most of the space west of Fort Worth.
That in part is where the name “Real Texas Blog” comes from.
We live in the ‘Real’ part of Texas out here. Except ‘out here’ covers a heck of a lot of territory.
It’s a whole other country….inside a whole other country.
I’m David, originally from Big Lake
Wherever in tarnation that is.

Where is Big Lake-it is between Big Spring and Big Bend. Where else would the lake be.
Big Lake is where many people with BIG HEARTS live or once lived
there!
I use to live in Odessa, Tx which is part of “Real Texas”. I had the pleasure of traveling all of that part of the country from Lubbock down to Ozona and Alpine to Abilene. I was selling Kirby vacuum cleaners, which are made in Andrews, Tx. There are alot of good people out there and I sure miss it! Big Lake was part of my normal travel route and I made it there about once a quarter. I hope all is well and God Bless “Real Texas”!
It is the county seat of Reagan County.
The latitude of Big Lake is 31.191N. The longitude is -101.46W.
It is in the Central Standard time zone. Elevation is 2,690 feet.
The estimated population, in 2003, was 2,649.
As a Yankee friend said one time, “In West Texas you can stand on a bucket and see straight ahead for two days”
